Design and Engineering of a Mold Stacker for use with Architectural Stone

At Zimmerman Steel & Supply, we specialize in the manufacture and fabrication of custom components and systems. Augmenting this capability is our ability to provide in-house design services. In this project we assisted a customer in the architectural stone industry to develop a safe and efficient mold stacker. Our engineers utilized Auto CAD and SolidWorks to develop a total design; this turnkey solution delivered safety and productivity to the customer as well as cost savings.

The mold stacker featured dimensions of 30' X 30" X 12", and is composed of steel, stainless steel, plate, sheet and tube. Fabrication included the use of our high definition plasma and laser cutter, CNC punching, and MIG welding to create high-integrity welds, all verified by comprehensive visual and dimensional inspections. To guarantee adhesion of the epoxy prime coat and a finish coat of paint, we sandblasted all surfaces to be painted.

The system was designed to cycle 30 units per minute and included complete PLC controls and sensors. After assembly, the system was fully tested and qualified prior to installation at the customer's Ohio facility. The turnaround time for this and similar projects, involving our in-house design services, typically requires six to nine months.
